7 Common Retail Sales Objections (and How to Handle Them)

The seven objections retail sales reps hear most — from 'it's cheaper online' to 'let me think about it' — and a simple framework for handling each.

Every retail rep hears the same handful of objections every day. The best reps don't wing them — they have a practised response. Here are the seven most common objections and how to handle each.

1. "It's cheaper online."

Don't defend the price — reframe the value. Immediate availability, no delivery wait or risk, in-person support, and easy warranty handling are worth real money. Make the total value obvious.

2. "Let me think about it."

This almost always hides a specific concern. Gently probe: "Of course — is it the price, or something about the product you're unsure of?" Surface the real objection and you can actually resolve it.

3. "It's too expensive."

Separate price from value. Break the cost down (per month, per year of use) and anchor it against the cost of getting it wrong or replacing a cheaper option.

4. "I need to ask my partner."

Legitimate — so make it easy. Offer to hold the item, summarise the key points they can share, and set a clear next step.

5. "I had a bad experience here before."

Acknowledge it sincerely — no excuses. Then show what's different now (warranty, support, your personal guarantee). Rebuilding trust beats arguing the past.

6. "I'm just browsing."

Don't pounce. Ask one light, genuine question that gives them a reason to engage, then let them lead.

7. "Can you give me a discount?"

Hold your value calmly. If you must move, trade — a bundle or add-on rather than a straight price cut, so you protect the margin and the perceived value.

The pattern

Notice the common thread: acknowledge, understand, then respond — never argue. The only way to make that automatic is practice.

That's exactly what a scored roleplay does: your reps rehearse these objections against an AI customer and get coached on each one. See how it works.
